Measure Your Ring Size: Chart and Quick, Easy Guide

Whether you’re in the market for an engagement ring or just picking up something fun and flashy for daily wear, a comfortable fit is key.

Actually, we take that back – you don’t deserve just a comfortable fit. You deserve a PERFECT fit.

That’s why it’s so important to measure your ring size. But, they don’t exactly teach you this stuff in school. Don’t worry; we’ve got your back. Find the correct size for your rings, no matter what finger you’re shopping for.

Is There an Average Ring Size?

Our bodies come in all different shapes and sizes – so of course, our finger sizes are also wildly different. But, based on data collected from jewelry stores worldwide, some standard ring sizes are more common than others.

In the U.S., most women’s ring fingers fit size 3 to a size 6.5. Worldwide, the average size for women is 6.5. When it comes to men’s rings, the average size range is 9 to 10, with 9 being the most popular choice.

At the end of the day, though, you can’t trust general averages to tell what ring is the right fit for you. After all, you’re anything but average!

Your Ring Size Guide

Before we get down to the nitty-gritty, here are some tips on how to get the most accurate measurement.

Mind the Time of Day

Did you know that time of day changes your finger size? When it’s early in the morning and still chilly out, your finger size is smaller than normal. So, measuring your finger early in the morning can mean a too-snug ring later. That’s why you want to wait until the early evening when temperatures are warmer to ensure a more comfortable fit.

Measure the Right Hand (or the Left)

Remember, the fingers on your dominant hand are usually larger than those on your non-dominant hand. So, if you’re sizing for an engagement ring or wedding band, remember to do the left ring finger, not the right one. There can be quite a difference between the two.

Beware of the Knuckle

When you’re measuring your finger, don’t forget about the knuckle. If the base of your finger is significantly smaller, the ring size needs to fit past the knuckle. Try measuring both your knuckle and the base of your finger to ensure you can put on your ring easily — and that it stays there.

Check Out the Ring Itself

If possible, keep the size of the ring in mind when picking a size. Wider bands tend to have a more snug fit, so you may want to order a slightly larger ring size if the band is over 6mm wide. A quarter to half-size difference should do the trick.

Chain rings also tend to run small, so you may need a full size larger to get the perfect fit.

All right – now you’re ready to roll. Here are the easiest ways to size a ring.

Go to a Jeweler

I know what you’re thinking, “Well, duh.” That said, if you’re having trouble, a jeweler can tell you what your size is pretty quickly by using a ring sizing tool. But, we’re all pretty busy, and what if you see the perfect, trendy gemstone ring online that you just have to buy right now!?

Sometimes, we just don’t have time to go to the jewelry store. Luckily, there are some ways you can take your measurements at home.

Printable Ring Sizer Tools

You can DIY it with a printable ring sizing tool. Just print it out, wrap it around the base of the finger that you’ll wear the ring on, and mark the spot where it overlaps with the other end.

Of course, printers are kind of out of fashion – so if you don’t have one handy, go ahead and move on to one of the other options below.

Try a Tape Measure

You can easily find your correct ring size with a measuring tape by wrapping it around the base of your finger. Take down the measurement in millimeters, then check it against a ring size chart. Voila, you’re done.

Use a String

No tape measure in the house? No problem.

Step 1: Grab a piece of string, floss, or even a strip of paper.

Step 2: Wrap it around – you guessed it – the base of your finger.

Step 3: With a marker or pen, draw a line where the ends overlap.

Step 4: Measure from line to line against a ruler and take down the measurement in millimeters to get the diameter of your perfect fit. Now, just check it against the conversion chart!

Keeping It a Secret?

What do you do if you’re shopping for a Valentine’s Day Gift or if there’s a wedding ring in your near future?

Asking your loved one ruins all the fun and surprise. You can ask friends and family if they know the person’s ring size – but that can ruin a surprise, too!

The easiest thing to do is get a hold of a different ring you’ve seen them wear. Use a ruler to measure the inside of the ring by laying it straight across the ring. The diameter is the distance from one inner point to the other.

You can also lay the existing ring on top of a printable ring size chart to find your partner’s ring size.

If you don’t have a way to find their exact size, your best bet is to opt for a larger size and get it resized later on.

Getting Your Ring Resized

If you do need to get a ring resized, make sure that you go to a reputable jeweler. The establishment that made the ring is the best place to turn to.
